Jonathan’s govt orders for 53 gold-plated customised iPhones worth N662million – British Company

British luxury products company, Gold and CO, has revealed that it has an order to from the Nigerian government to deliver 53 customised gold iphones for the celebration of the next independent celebration. The founder of Gold and Co, Amjad Ali, told the UK’s the Independent newspaper that the Nigerian government has made an order of “53 gold iPhones to mark the country’s 53rd year of independence from Britain next month.” Ali also told The Independent: “We strip the units down and then plate them in copper, nickel and then pure gold.” The Nigerian order will reportedly be engraved with the coat of arms, a shield and two horses. “We will engrave them with the coat of arms, a shield and two horses,” he said. The Bristol-born businessman based in Dubai is bracing himself for a flood of orders for iPhones clad not in the gold-effect finish of the new iPhone 5S, but the real stuff. Amjad Ali supplies royal families, governments, and minted customers across Russia, China and the Middle East with gold-plated devices that cost up to £50,000. The 42-year-old entrepreneur, who grew up in Glasgow, has pre-ordered hundreds of new iPhones. His team at Gold and Co. will set to work the day after launch before delivering the devices to luxury retailers. “We strip the units down and then plate them in copper, nickel and then pure gold,” he told the Independent. “We have limited units per region and each is numbered and placed in a handmade wooden box with a certificate of authenticity and wax seal.” Ali typically delivers 50 devices a month, including Blackberries and iPads, but orders rose to more than 300 a month when the iPhone 5 was launched last year. The firm expects greater demand still for the sixth-generation device, announced today.

Eddie Murphy Releases Reggae Song With Snoop Dogg

In an unexpected pairing, Eddie Murphy has collaborated with Snoop Dogg for a new single called "Red Light". Murphy shared a link to the reggae song in his first-ever Twitter post. In another post, he said that the single is the first cut of his newly-announced album entitled "9". In the reggae song, Murphy is featured singing and playing guitar. "Broken economy, the streets are dire," the "Dreamgirls" actor sings the catchy track. "Even more than before, I need some betterness to take me higher. Feels like I'm gonna blow." Dogg, who released his own reggae album under the name Snoop Lion earlier this year, contributes a few lines toward the end of the song too. The official music video for the single will debut on September 9. Murphy is not a new face in the music industry. The actor released several albums and singles in the mid '80s and early '90s. Dangote refinery to employ 8,000 engineers, create jobs for 85,000 Nigerians

The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said about 8,000 engineers would be needed for the smooth take off of the nine- billion- dollar Dangote Refinery/Fertiliser plant in Ondo. Dangote told State House correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja that the project, when completed, would provide direct and indirect jobs for 85,000 Nigerians. He said the group had secured a 3.3 billion-dollar credit facility from a consortium of banks for the project. According to him, importation of petroleum products will end by 2016 as the plant will commence production in the next three years. He said his plan was to make the country self-reliant in petrochemical and petroleum products, as well as make it an industrial giant. “Now, Nigeria is going to be taken out of the list of countries that import petroleum products. We will produce 20 million metric tonnes which is equivalent to what Nigeria consumes currently. “Today, we did the signing ceremony, the vice-president came to witness the signing but we insisted on coming to thank Mr president for his policies . “Without good government policies, there is no way the private sector can invest in Nigeria, because we are not Father Christmas at all. The policies have to be right,’’ he said. According to Dangote, Nigeria currently spends about 30 billion dollars annually on importation of petroleum products. He said the complex planned by his group would make Nigeria a net exporter of petroleum products, including diesel and aviation fuel, as well as poly-propylene and fertiliser. (NAN)

Nigeria's Dangote signs deal to build oil refinery

Africa's wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, has signed a multi-billion dollar deal with banks to finance the building of an oil refinery in Nigeria. The refinery would be the largest in Africa, turning Nigeria into a petroleum exporter, he told the BBC. Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer but lacks refining capacity and has to import most of its fuel. The West African state is often hit by fuel shortages, and conflict over control of its oil wealth. People in Nigeria's oil-producing southern Niger Delta region are among the country's poorest and accuse the government and oil companies of failing to develop the area. 'Dilapidated refineries' Mr Dangote, a Nigerian who made his fortune in cement, flour and sugar, is worth an estimated $16bn (£10bn) and has topped the Forbes list of Africa's richest men for the past three years. Mr Dangote told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme the refinery would create "thousands" of jobs. It would be built in the south-west and would become operational in 2016, he said. Mr Dangote signed a $3.3bn loan deal with local and foreign banks to build the refinery, as well as fertiliser and petrochemical plants. The entire venture would cost $9bn, with $3bn in equity from Dangote Industries and $6bn to be raised in loan capital. The initial loan facility was co-ordinated globally by Standard Chartered and in Nigeria by Guaranty Trust Bank, London's Financial Times newspaper reports. "At least for the first time in our lifetime, we'll see Nigeria exporting petroleum products," Mr Dangote told Focus on Africa on the BBC World Service. "We'll also see Nigeria for the first time exporting fertiliser rather than using hard-earned foreign exchange to import fertiliser," he added. Nigeria currently imports more than three-quarters of its fuel despite being the continent's biggest producer. Although it has two refineries in the Port Harcourt area, neither runs at full capacity. Previous efforts to repair Nigeria's dilapidated refineries and build new ones have been scuppered to protect the interests of powerful fuel importers, some of whom have been linked to a subsidy scam costing the country billions of dollars a year, correspondents say. Fuel in Nigeria is sold at a subsidised price. A government attempt to remove the subsidy in 2012 led to nationwide protests. The plan was subsequently dropped. Last year an investigation revealed that in two years, more than $6bn was lost in a fuel subsidy scam.

All I can say is that both brands, Etisalat and MTN are fantastic brands and they are my friends. Why do you think these telecoms companies have chosen you? I really don’t know. I was just busy doing my thing and then they came. I believe everybody aspires for good things. We all desire for an elevation in status, but how it may come, we sometimes don’t know. The only explanation I can give is to say that it has been the grace of God. Do you think people now celebrate and recognize more for your MTN endorsement than for your acting? I think it more of what I have been doing and God’s grace. I think it is more of everything. And I’m lucky to have worked with MTN and Etisalat. How much of an influence has your wife been to your success? I have a very beautiful woman for a wife. A woman who has made the house my home. Every time I go out, I want to go back home.
